In the frozen forests of eastern Finland during the Winter War of 1939, silence was a weapon—and Simo Häyhä was its master.

He was a small man, barely over five feet tall, with a face weathered by years of hunting in the wild Karelia woods. Before the Soviet invasion, he was just a farmer and a competitive marksman. But when war came, he became something else entirely. Something the Red Army would come to fear.

Wearing only a white camouflage suit—no scope, no glory—Simo would slip into the snow like a ghost. While other snipers used telescopic sights, Häyhä used simple iron sights. Scopes could glint in the sun. Fog up in the cold. He wasn’t interested in the frills. He was interested in results.

He packed snow in front of his rifle to muffle the sound. He kept snow in his mouth so his breath wouldn’t steam in the air. Then he would wait. Patient as death. Sometimes for an entire day, motionless.

By the end of his 100-day campaign, Soviet records estimated over 500 confirmed kills. The men he shot rarely saw him. The few who did called him "The White Death." They sent counter-snipers. He killed them. They shelled the forest. He emerged unharmed.

On March 6, 1940, his luck finally ran out. A Soviet explosive bullet struck him in the face, shattering his jaw and blowing off most of his left cheek. His comrades thought he was dead. He wasn’t. He awoke days later, just as Finland signed the peace treaty.

He lived another 60 years, half his face gone but his sharp eyes intact. When asked how he became such a deadly sniper, Häyhä gave a simple answer:

“I did what I was told, as well as I could.”
